The YMS Drama Company is an after-school activity open to all students from grade five through eight. Each year the Company presents a musical production specifically designed for middle school students. All students who are in good academic standing can participate as cast and crew members. This year we chose to rename this activity changing it to the YMS Drama Company. This new name reflects more closely the objectives of the group. We are trying to emphasize the commitment level students must have in order to participate. Rather than thinking of us as a "club" we feel we present a program more like a dance company. Students need to feel that their role in the "Company" is vital and that other cast members rely on their attendance at all rehearsals. In school and off campus sports activities require a level of commitment that we would also like to see in our theater company. Absences affect all aspects of rehearsals and we hope to encourage the similar feelings of responsibilities that are expected during sports practices and activities.
We have two supervisors. Mr. Robert Carbone works with stage direction, set building, and production duties. Ms. Susan Frank directs the music and choreography and coordinates the parent volunteers for the show. Their goal is to provide a fun learning experience that teaches performance skills and promotes an atmosphere of teamwork across the wide range of grade levels and abilities found at York Middle School.
Company members work from early December through March auditioning, rehearsing, building and painting sets, and developing costumes for the show. Under the guidance of the supervisors and with the help of parent volunteers, students get a complete picture of what goes into putting on a large musical production.
During 2016 we transformed our own stage in the gymnasium into a performance space for our Spring production, "The Love Note." Last year we presented "Understudies The Musical" on our own stage. This year we will present the popular teen musical "Walt Disney's High School Musical Jr." Once again teen struggles with relationships and responsibilities will be examined. This will be a fun and rewarding experience for the students and supervisors.
Over the past several years our Company has managed to be self sustaining; providing its own funding for production costs. Along with paying its own way, the YMS Drama Company has also made contributions to purchase items available for use by the entire school such as: building flats to create a performance space on the stage in the gym, purchasing stage lighting, and a complete portable sound system. Students also take part in the painting and decorating of the set pieces and props. During the show preparation, the Company members get a chance to work with kids across all grade levels, make new friends, and explore theater as a possible continuing interest.
